World of Autism: Comprehensive Services for Children and Parents

Enrich, Encourage, Empower, Enlighten, Energise
ENJOY!

When I first embarked on my quest to improve the quality of the lives of autistic children and the families in Singapore, I envisioned the creation of a comprehensive service centre. Regardless of the ages and the functioning levels of the autistic children, they could obtain guidance, assistance and support for their diverse needs at an affordable price. If we could not provide the services ourselves, we could at least direct them to other service providers, so that no family would have to feel isolated and alone.

The World of Autism, under the auspices of Kampung Senang Education and Charity Foundation’s Learning to Learn Centre, constitutes the first baby step towards realising this vision. Hopefully, with the support of families, professionals, along with members of the general public, we can make bigger strides in the future.

Slated to start at the end of May, this centre will offer the following services:

Individualised and Customised Learning Programme
• An individualised learning programme that is customised to the unique interests
and learning preferences of autistic children;
• Guided group interaction and activities; and
• Opportunity for parents/caregivers to acquire techniques by helping their child
in the programme.

Parent Training Seminars and Workshops
• Three-hour weekly seminars to empower parents to take charge of their
children’s overall development (academic, behavioural, social and sensory);
• Cosy, support-group-like atmosphere; and
• Opportunities for parents to pose questions pertaining to their child.

Individualised Consultations and Assessments
• One-on-one interviews with parents to address their specific concerns about
their child; and
• Support and guidance for parents.
** Not a substitute for a diagnostic assessment.

Advocacy

• Help for parents with mildly autistic children experiencing difficulties
with mainstream school settings; and
• Advice on negotiations with educators and school administrators.

Family Counseling

• Opportunity for parents and children (autistic and typical siblings) to
resolve family tensions; and
• Identification of causes and solutions to improve family lives.
